After midnight on July 1, 1862, following the Battle of Glendale Gen. R.E. Lee set up his headquarters in the blacksmith shop of C.W. Smith. Dissapointed that he had failed to destroy the Federal force, and allowed them to slip away, Lee concluded that a change of plan was needed.
